Guest Experience Positions

Zoo Ambassador Volunteer

Year-round position
Time Commitment: One shift per week for at least six months per year
Shifts available: Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays from 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–4:30 p.m. (may vary seasonally)

Zoo Ambassador volunteers enthusiastically assist visitors with questions and wayfinding, provide information on daily events, and ensure each guest has an exemplary zoo visit. Zoo Ambassadors rotate between key areas on grounds, including the Searle Visitor Center and animal buildings, to welcome guests and provide tips for discovering all Lincoln Park Zoo has to offer!

Skills and Qualifications

• Must be 18 or older
• Must be friendly and approachable
• Respects and relates to diverse populations
• Works well independently and in teams
• Maintains confidentiality about information regarding animal news and health, zoo initiatives, and other potentially sensitive subjects
• Should be comfortable collaborating and following zoo policies and guest service standards
• Communicates clearly and empathetically with staff, volunteers, and guests

Physical Requirements

• Ability to remain in one area for a scheduled period
• Ability to move around zoo grounds in all weather conditions; accommodations available
• Closed-toe shoes are required

Onboarding Requirements

• Complete online application; if you need help filling it out, email volunteer@lpzoo.org
• Successfully complete a virtual interview with the Volunteer Services department. Please choose a date:
  • Sunday, February 8, at 10 a.m.
  • Sunday, February 8, at 11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, February 11, at 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, February 12, at 1 p.m.
  • Friday, February 13, at 10 a.m.
• Complete and pass a standard criminal background check
• Attend a day-long on zoo grounds orientation on one of the following dates:
  • Monday, March 2
  • Saturday, March 7
  • Friday, March 13
  • Saturday, March 21
• Attend and complete all required training courses, which include in-person sessions and online at-your-own-pace courses. Choose one in-person training date:
  • Monday, March 23
  • Saturday, March 28
• Complete two shifts with a veteran volunteer to further orient you to your role
