Resources for Educators

Welcome to Lincoln Park Zoo! We are proud to serve teachers and educators in Chicagoland and beyond. We strive to provide science-based information and activities, from field trips to internships, to help nurture a love of nature and inspire conservation action.

Please note: We try to accommodate as many requests for information and interviews as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange interviews with zoo keepers or veterinarians. Check out our social channels to meet keepers, discover species, and more.

Check out our on-site Zoo Explorers programs for grades K-12 and our virtual Zoo Investigations programs for grades K-5.

Explore our YouTube channel to learn about animals and the exciting working taking place at the zoo.

Inclusive Interpretive Signage

Presenting information in an accessible way

Cultural spaces like zoos, aquariums, and museums serve as important gathering spaces in their communities, where millions of guests go to learn, spend time together and enjoy themselves. Though these institutions believe in being accessible to all, people with disabilities nonetheless sometimes find they cannot engage as fully as other community members.

Beyond the physical layout of spaces, one of best ways we can make a zoo visit more accessible to all visitors is thinking about how animal information is presented to guests. Moving away from a purely visual-text format toward a multi-modal design enables more folks to access the information the zoo shares.

This project used proven practices in cocreation and universal design to create new inclusive exhibit signage that both enhance the visitor experience and deepen our knowledge of accessible signage for future projects.
