Animal Behavior Monitoring Positions

ZooMonitor Volunteer

Year-round position
Time Commitment: One shift per week for at least twelve months
Shifts available: Daily: 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–4:30 p.m. (may vary seasonally) Shifts available most days of the week: Volunteers are most needed on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays; Sundays are currently full.

ZooMonitor volunteers observe the behavior of zoo animals and record data using the ZooMonitor app on an iPad. This data is shared with Animal Care staff to inform the management of the animals and provide high-quality care. Volunteers in this role must have a strong interest in animals and keen attention to detail. They must be comfortable with technology, but prior data collection experience is not required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Works well independently and in teams
  • Maintains confidentiality about sensitive animal info
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment and adhering to zoo policies and procedures
  • Comfortable receiving supportive coaching and feedback

Physical Requirements

  • Closed-toe shoes required
  • Ability to remain in one area for a scheduled period
  • Ability to move around zoo grounds in all weather conditions; accommodations available

Onboarding Requirements

  • Complete an online application; if you need help filling out an application, email volunteer@lpzoo.org
  • Successfully complete an interview with the Volunteer Services department on one of the following dates:
    1. Wednesday, February 4, at 1 p.m.
    2. Thursday, February 5, at 11 a.m.
    3. Friday, February 6, at 2 p.m.
    4. Thursday, February 7, at 12 p.m.
  • Complete and pass a standard criminal background check
  • Attend a day-long orientation at the zoo on one of the following dates:
    1. Monday, March 2
    2. Saturday, March 7
    3. Friday, March 13
    4. Saturday, March 21
  • Attend and complete all required training and online coursework
  • Complete five weeks of training, one shift per week
  • Training will occur once per week based off shift availability during the following periods:
    1. Spring Training: Weeks of April 19–May 23
    2. Summer Training: Weeks of July 12–August 15
  • You must attend every single training date in the series to be considered; if you miss a training date, you will not be accepted as a volunteer
  • Pass an accuracy test at end of training
  • Begin volunteering shortly after training (typically after one or two weeks)
  • Once you begin, continuously record reliable data
