Teen Opportunities

Lincoln Park Zoo offers a variety of programs specifically for teens. If you’re a high school student who enjoys teaching others and wants to learn about careers in conservation, one of these might work for you!

Summer Opportunities

The application for summer 2026 opens on February 1 and closes on March 9. Click here to apply.

Applicants may apply to multiple programs simultaneously. Please note: Eligibility requirements vary between programs.

Virtual Application Information Sessions

If you are planning to apply to one of the zoo’s summer teen programs and have questions about how to submit a high-quality application, drop by one of our virtual information sessions on Zoom to chat directly with Teen Programs staff:

Malott Family Zoo Intern Program

Chicago high school students, ages 16–18, work as on-grounds interpreters to inform the public about animal science and conservation. Teens also work on independent projects which promote positive conservation during this educational paid internship that lasts seven weeks. Applicants must be entering grades 10–12 or their freshman year of college.

Malott Family Research Apprenticeship Program

Chicago high school students, ages 16–18, spend seven weeks working alongside zoo researchers and engaging in authentic scientific research during this rigorous paid apprenticeship. Applicants must be entering grades 11–12 or their freshman year of college.

Camp Teen Volunteer

Chicago high school students, ages 13–18, spend five weeks assisting with the running of Conservation Camp for grades PreK–5. This is an unpaid service-learning opportunity for students entering grades 9–12 or their freshman year of college.

Nature Buds Internship

Chicago high school students, ages 16–18, can join this in-person internship that supports nature play efforts at Lincoln Park Zoo. Nature Buds interns help create a sensory-rich learning environment as they work with the zoo’s youngest visitors.

Opportunities During the School Year

Conservation Ambassadors Board

Chicago high school students, ages 16–18, contribute to the zoo’s public conservation programming by planning special events and outreach initiatives for their peers. This program runs twice each year from September to November and March to May, with most meetings taking place on Saturdays.

Zoo Teens: Roll for Wildlife

Are you a fan of role-playing games? Do you love animals and conservation? This is the event for you! Join Lincoln Park Zoo’s Teen Programs Team on Sunday, January 25, in playing a session of Dungeons and Dragons-inspired roleplay and combat focused on a conservation topic. This event is open to beginning adventurers and experts alike.
