This in-person internship supports nature play efforts at Lincoln Park Zoo. Nature Buds interns help create a sensory-rich learning environment as they work with the zoo’s youngest visitors. The position is ideal for applicants who are hoping to gain experience in education and/or enjoy spending time outdoors. Participants will receive a stipend through After School Matters.

Example Responsibilities Include:

  • Encouraging creativity and promoting motor skills through music, art, story times, and building.
  • Assisting guests as they explore different textures, sights, and sounds with sensory bins.
  • Facilitating play and maintaining a safe space.
  • Supporting children as they direct their own experience.
  • Helping children and caregivers get oriented to the zoo and the programming.

The application for the summer 2026 Nature Buds program can be accessed in April by creating an account on the After School Matters website.

Eligibility

To qualify, an applicant must:

  • Be able to attend all program dates.
  • Be a resident of the city of Chicago.
  • Attend a Chicago high school.
  • Be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2026.

Time Commitment

  • Shifts are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Shifts are cancelled on Friday, July 3, for Independence Day.
