Walter Family Arctic Tundra

Walter Family Arctic Tundra

Walter Family Arctic Tundra is an expansive habitat strategically designed for polar bears, a carnivorous species threatened in the wild due to human impacts, such as climate change, which rapidly melts sea ice. This specialized habitat can support a breeding pair and cubs.

The space offers a split view of both water and land, an immersive sensory experience complete with squishy flooring imitating damp shoreline soil and a tactile ice wall. A 10 square-foot training wall gives visitors a glimpse into the positive reinforcement training methods used by Animal Care staff to promote positive welfare.

Commitment to Care

Animals may not be visible at all times. To promote positive animal welfare, we provide animals with choices. They can choose to spend time in areas that are out of public view.

Take Action With Us
