Haas Halo smooth hydrangea, a selection of the species native to Illinois, has dense, upright blue-green foliage and white lace cap flowers that grow up to 14 inches in width. The flowers bloom in mid to late summer and dry out in the fall and persist on the stems, which provide cover for wildlife, until spring. This shrub cultivar prefers average, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade and can be effective as a single specimen plant or in a large group. Due to its abundance of small, fuzzy, fertile flowers, this hydrangea is a favorite for bees and other pollinators.
