Lincoln Park Zoo Announces Rhino Calf’s Name and Debut Date

Her name is Hazina, which means “treasured” in Swahili.

Chicago (APRIL 23, 2026) – On March 19, eastern black rhinoceros Kapuki gave birth to a female calf at Lincoln Park Zoo. Since then, the newborn has been hitting important milestones like walking, nursing, growing, and bonding with mom—and now she has a name and is ready to meet Chicago!

The calf has been named Hazina (Ha-zee-nah). The calf was named by Jim Neis, a longtime Lincoln Park Zoo Life Trustee and supporter. Hazina translates to “treasured” in Swahili as Jim says the rhino calf will be treasured by all of Chicago. The zoo is grateful to Jim for including the zoo in his estate plans, ensuring that visitors will connect with animals like Hazina and Kapuki at no cost for generations to come.

Hazina will make her public debut with Kapuki on Wednesday, April 29 at an exclusive preview for Lincoln Park Zoo Members. Kapuki and Hazina will have access to their outdoor habitat for the first time and her care team are hopeful the calf will be eager to explore this new-to-her space. Not a member? Press are invited to attend the preview and will have an unobstructed view of the rhino habitat. The rhinos will have access to their habitat promptly at 9 a.m. Please RSVP to Anna Cieslik via email at acieslik@lpzoo.org or phone at 312-288-5129. Interviews will be available upon request.

To celebrate Hazina’s arrival, Lincoln Park Zoo is offering a limited-edition Adopt an Animal package including mom and baby rhinoceros plushes. Friends of the zoo can also celebrate by visiting Lincoln Park Zoo’s Wish List and contributing to the rhinos’ daily dose of fresh leafy plants.
