About

Yasmeen’s interest in zoological medicine began when she participated in Texas A&M University’s macaw conservation program, based in Peru, as an undergraduate student. This first collaboration with avian medicine specialists and biologists developed her clinical interest.

After completing a doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Montreal, she stayed there as an intern in the large animal medicine and surgery department. It was during this internship that she developed a research interest in the use of anxiolytics to reduce stress and improve quality of life in captive wild ruminants. This became the subject of her master’s thesis. She continued to pursue learning opportunities in the zoological medicine field as an extern in various institutions, such as the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo and the Granby Zoo.

As the veterinary resident at Lincoln Park Zoo, her role is to provide the animals with medical care while benefiting from instruction by the zoo’s specialized veterinarians in zoological medicine. She also takes part in research initiatives at the zoo and helps to teach veterinary students during their preceptorship rotations. She aims to become a diplomate of the American and European Colleges of Zoological Medicine at the conclusion of her residency.
