Kate began her scientific career studying the neurobiology of the primate visual system. While conducting her dissertation research, she developed an interest in clinical zoological medicine. After completing a doctorate in veterinary medicine, she pursued a clinical internship at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, a postdoctoral research position at University of California–Davis, and a residency in zoological medicine at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo.

Kate joined Lincoln Park Zoo as associate veterinarian in 2017 and became a diplomat of the American College of Zoological Medicine in 2019. Her role at Lincoln Park Zoo includes providing medical care for the animals in the zoo’s care, supervising the certified veterinary technicians, assisting with instruction of the veterinary resident and veterinary student preceptors, and conducting or providing veterinary support for research initiatives at the zoo. She is also an active member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, serving on the Research Committee to evaluate proposals for funding through the Wild Animal Health Fund.
