Karina hails from a suburb in northern New Jersey and obtained her undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University in 2013, where she majored in animal science and minored in Italian, equine science, and agribusiness management. During the summer of her junior year, she interned as a browse assistant at Philadelphia Zoo, where she was introduced to the world of exotic animal nutrition.

After graduation, she completed an animal nutrition internship at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and then interned at Philadelphia Zoo as a browse coordinator. After her internships, she decided to pursue a master’s degree in animal nutrition, so she moved to Sutton-Bonington, England, to complete her thesis on Asian elephant nutrition. Karina then moved back to the United States to become a lead commissary keeper at Palm Beach Zoo. Her time there was short-lived; she began her current position at Lincoln Park Zoo in 2016.
