Start your day with an intimate look at the fascinating animals living at Lincoln Park Zoo! During each meet-and-greet, you will join other guests and one of our animal curators on a journey to learn about a specific animal group—from their habits and diets to their individualized care and general personality traits.
Each event will start with a short introduction followed by a 20-minute presentation and a 10-minute Q&A session.
About the Speakers
S. Sunny Nelson
Saturday, August 8: African Penguins
S. Sunny Nelson, Hope B. McCormick Curator of Birds, began her career as a birds and small animals keeper at Zoo Atlanta. She has been at Lincoln Park Zoo since 2010, first as lead keeper and then as zoological manager of McCormick Bird House, and currently as Hope B. McCormick Curator of Birds. Sunny oversees more than 55 diverse avian species.
Sunny is the Species Survival Plan (SSP) coordinator and studbook keeper for the Inca tern population. She also works closely with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Population Management Center (PMC), U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources to maintain a master studbook for the Puerto Rican Parrot captive breeding and recovery program.
Saturday, August 22: Polar Bears
Mike worked at three different zoos before joining Lincoln Park Zoo in 2017. His career started at Binder Park Zoo, and he has also worked at Denver Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Mike currently oversees the species and keeper teams at Regenstein African Journey, Walter Family Arctic Tundra, Pepper Family Wildlife Center, Kovler Seal Pool, and Farm- in-the-Zoo. He actively works with other departments and organizations accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) on maintaining optimal animal welfare and sustainable populations.
Actively involved in AZA programs, Mike is the Species Survival Plan® (SSP) coordinator for Nile lechwe, a vice-chair of the Antelope and Giraffe Taxon Advisory Group, and a steering committee member for the African Painted Dog SSP®. Mike is also active with Polar Bears International working climate change conservation action.

How do I log into the event?
You will receive a Zoom link and unique password, via your registered email address, within two hours of the event. Please click the provided link and enter your password 5-10 minutes before the event begins. You will be placed in a virtual waiting room and will automatically gain access to the event as it begins. If you see the “Waiting for the Host to Start the Meeting” message, the event has begun yet, which gives you time to test your audio.
You can access Zoom via PC/Mac/Android/iPhone—however, we strongly encourage you to check your settings in advance before attempting to join the virtual event. To ensure a smooth virtual experience, you should have a secure internet connection.
You will be muted upon entry and will not be allowed to unmute or share your screen with others in the group. The best way to experience the event is through the “Speaker View” option, which will appear in the top-right-hand side of your Zoom screen.

Will I see animals?
Yes! Events in this series feature animals living at a specific location within the zoo. But remember, most habitats include behind-the-scenes areas, and the animals can choose where to spend their time. However, our curators will provide animals with enrichment during each event to encourage activity.
Can I ask the host a question?
Yes! Your question will be sent to the host of the meeting, who will try to get through as many as possible at the conclusion of the event. If you have a follow up question that was not addressed during the virtual event, please email us at email@example.com and we will try our best to reply with the answer.

To redeem your member discount, please follow the below steps:

Can tickets be traded, transferred, or refunded?
If you cannot attend the event, you can give your ticket to a friend or family member. However, there are no refunds for tickets purchased for special events at the zoo.
