B.S. – Biology, Wittenberg University
Certified Veterinary Technician
About Joe Ullmer:
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2003, Joe soon began volunteering at the Ohio Wildlife Center, where he cared for native birds, reptiles and mammals. This job sparked an interest in pursuing veterinary-specific experience, so he obtained employment as a veterinary assistant at a private practice, working primarily with dogs and cats. Later, he attended an accredited veterinary technology program at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio. During this education, he completed externships at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden.
Upon graduation in 2009, he continued to work in private practice as a registered veterinary technician, refining his skills and knowledge of veterinary medicine. In 2010, he became veterinary technician at the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, Indiana, and gained experience with numerous exotic species at this facility. In January 2013, Joe joined the Lincoln Park Zoo staff as a veterinary technician.
Joe has attended multiple conferences to further his understanding of veterinary medicine, including the American Animal Hospital Association Conference, the Midwest Veterinary Conference and the Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators Conference. As a member of the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians (AZVT), he has also attended two AZVT conferences and will likely attend many more throughout his career. When he is not working, he enjoys time with his wife—a veterinarian—and their cats as well as rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
