Goodbye Summer, Goodbye Anana: Lincoln Park Zoo’s Polar Bear Heads East

Zoo’s iconic polar bear departs soon for temporary new home at North Carolina Zoo

Chicago (August 21, 2014) – Chicago’s iconic polar bear is heading to North Carolina Zoo as the Lincoln Park Zoo begins construction on the new polar bear exhibit and African penguin exhibit slated to open in 2016. The zoo will be hosting “Goodbye Summer, Goodbye Anana,” a farewell event on Aug. 23 for guests to visit the polar bear before she heads east.

The event will run from 10 a.m. - noon at the current polar bear exhibit at the north end of the zoo. Guests will have an opportunity to write a farewell note on banners in front of Anana’s exhibit, interact with animal experts to learn about this fascinating species and watch as the bear chases fish or rolls around in a pile of flake ice for enrichment.

“The animal care staff will miss our daily interactions with Anana immensely,” said Mark Kamhout, curator of mammals at Lincoln Park Zoo. “Anana’s departure is bittersweet but is also a reminder of the state-of-the-art exhibit that will begin construction and ultimately enhance the welfare of our animals here at the zoo.”

Anana will be shifting to North Carolina Zoo as part of the collaborative work with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Lincoln Park Zoo will begin construction on the new polar bear exhibit upon completion of the Regenstein Macaque Forest this fall. The new immersive exhibit will include multiple viewing shelters including a cave with viewing glass where the bears can cool off with cold and ice and guests can observe. Roughly 45,000 sq. feet will be transformed to create state-of-the-art spaces for both polar bears and African penguins.

“We are delighted to welcome Anana from our friends at Lincoln Park Zoo,” said Dr. David Jones, director of North Carolina Zoo. “She will be the highlight of our soon-to-be opened polar bear exhibit, opening this October.”

Until her transition, Anana can be seen daily at the polar bear exhibit on the north end of the zoo. For more information about Anana and other zoo animals or projects, visit
