Nature Boardwalk Update
As snow covers the South Pond, it also marks a season of progress in creating Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo.
Pepper Construction has been working hard to convert the South Pond into a new urban ecosystem. The old, crumbling concrete-and-steel walkway has been removed, clearing space for natural shorelines and the new, namesake boardwalk. The pond’s island has been re-engineered to provide a welcoming home for migratory birds, including the endangered black-crowned night herons that nest there. The foundation has been laid for the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion, and work is now underway to restore the pond’s Lester E. Fisher Bridge.
While planting vegetation and welcoming new arrivals will have to wait until spring, zoo staff are busy preparing programs to promote this new urban ecosystem! Look for more updates in the months to come.
