Lead Animal Keeper - Bird

DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:
Under general supervision, participates in all aspects of animal care and maintenance of a particular assigned zoo location. Oversees daily operation of a keeper staff and in absence of area supervisor, provides direct supervision of keeper staff. Responsible for meeting quality and quantity standards for assigned area.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides daily care to animals and their enclosures, including, but not limited to: cleaning, feeding, watering, grooming (i.e., domestic animals), observing, animal training and enrichment, record keeping and maintaining records. Tasks may include heavy manual and skilled work such as moving and manipulating heavy food items, hoses, bales of hay, equipment and crated animals.
Advances zoo mission through participating in conservation programs. Assists in the development and delivery of educational programs, formally through Education Department, and informally through interaction with zoo guests. Conducts tours for guests, staff, and volunteers. May participate in research projects.
Assumes supervisory role in the absence of area supervisor: assigns work duties to keeper staff, prepares and presents training to assigned staff. May be assigned jobs which require coordination with other zoo departments. Orients and trains staff assigned to work location. Works necessary hours as requested, including all shifts, weekends, holidays, and special events. Schedule is fixed rotation. Other duties as assigned to maintain efficient and quality zoo operations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent (GED) is required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in the Biological Sciences (i.e. Biology, Zoology, Ecology) or a closely related discipline is preferred. A minimum of three years experience performing animal care activities in a zoo, aquarium or like institution is required. Experience in designated taxonomic area is preferred. Comparable combination of education and experience may also qualify a person for position. Ability to give and follow oral and written directions effectively. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work in any of the assigned animal areas fulfilling all requirements of the title. Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, and zoo guests. Demonstrated good judgment.
