Career Explorers

Hurvis Center Career Explorers at Lincoln Park Zoo

Introducing Youth to Career Possibilities

Not all positions at the zoo require employees to have an interest in working directly with animals. The Career Explorers program lets Chicago-area high school students immerse themselves for three weeks in different career paths at Lincoln Park Zoo—from biologist to graphic designer.

Career Explorers Details:

As a Career Explorer, participating youth will get a firsthand look at a number of necessary departments, learning more about each career path while simultaneously gaining experience working in a zoo setting. The program will provide participants with support to fully integrate the experience into their academic goals, career plans and areas of personal strength.

Learning will continue throughout the school year with Extended Connections, a program that includes both Career Explorers and Research Apprentices in monthly sessions. Group activities will help participants develop career awareness and tie their summer experiences to school studies.

Requirements for eligibility:

  • City of Chicago resident
  • Entering grades 11 or 12
  • Between the ages of 16–18
  • Legally able to work in the United States.

Compensation and time commitment: Stipend/3 weeks during the summer. Extended Connections sessions are unpaid and occur once a month on Saturdays (September 2014-June 2015).

Applications will be accepted through April 25, 2014, for the summer 2014 season.
