About Emma Martell:

Emma began learning in informal settings as a young child; her mother took her to Chicago museums every week. She received her education degree from Northwestern University, where her professors stressed the need to give students authentic, differentiated experiences. Emma soon saw that the best place to foster this kind of learning was in informal settings like zoos and aquariums. Emma gained experience through jobs and internships at the Evanston Art Center, Chicago History Museum, Kohl Children’s Museum and National Hellenic Museum. She tutored autistic and dyslexic children after graduating, and then became a writing tutor at a high school. Tutoring gave her insight into how to motivate students and adapt instruction to their learning styles. Emma recently spent a summer working in the Butterflies & Blooms exhibit at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Watching butterflies emerge from their chrysalides each day reminded her of the magic of nature and science. Emma enjoys sharing this magic with zoo visitors.
