About Lauren Kao:

Lauren completed her undergraduate degree in genetics and molecular biology at Northwestern University, followed by an M.A. in communication sciences and disorders. After completing graduate work in the field of neuroscience focused on the role of inflammation in epilepsy, she joined Lincoln Park Zoo’s veterinary services team as the 2013–2014 zoological medicine intern.

In addition to the clinical and research experience she is gaining during her time at the zoo, Lauren has been able to assist with several of the department’s ongoing projects. Most recently, she assisted with the publication of the American Association for Zoo Veterinarians’ “Infectious Disease Manual, Second Edition” and is currently helping design a study to investigate novel methods of drug delivery to avian and reptile species. She hopes to continue to apply her background in human biomedical sciences to a career in veterinary medicine.
