About George Prevolos:
Before attending the University of Illinois (UIUC), George volunteered as a veterinary assistant at VCA LaGrange Park Animal Hospital. He also volunteered for two summers at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in South Africa. This conservation center allowed George to gain hands-on caretaking experience with a variety of species, including lions, leopards, hyenas, servals, white and black rhinos, and more.
During his time at UIUC, George studied abroad in Costa Rica with Dr. Paul Garber’s project analyzing behavior, ecology and diet for white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) in different forests. This research gave him field-tracking experience with this species in the rainforest surrounding the La Suerte Biological Field Station. During undergraduate summers, George was the animal care intern at Lincoln Park Zoo. This internship involved observation-based body scoring and studying the behavior and space use of the zoo’s animals. George’s participation aided the development of the ZooMonitor app, which is now being used in zoos across the United States.
In May 2014 George completed his undergraduate degree in animal sciences at UIUC. Currently George is Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooMed Support Intern in the veterinary and nutrition department with Lester E. Fisher Director of Veterinary Medicine Kathryn Gamble, D.V.M., as his mentor. He is currently assisting a study on preventative healthcare in chimpanzees and plans to pursue a career in zoological veterinary medicine.
