Communicating Our Core Messages

I’ve been busy lately overseeing not only animal care but also the administrative elements of my job. On Tuesday we participated in the 13th Annual Museum Day in Springfield, when representatives from museums, zoos and aquariums statewide discussed the value of our institutions with Illinois legislators.
Support from local, state and national legislators is critical to operating Lincoln ParkZoo, which as you know is free and open to all, 365 days a year. We work with elected officials, communicating the value of our zoo and providing them updates on animal care as well as our work with various state agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
In this regard, Lincoln Park Zoo’s affiliation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is critical. The AZA not only accredits zoos that meet a rigorous set of standards, but also serves as a communal voice for over 200 members, helping to strengthen our messages and clarify our mission to the public and legislators alike.
Like animal care, this is an ongoing process. As always, I’ll keep you posted.
