The Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan

Formed in 1989, the Chimpanzee SSP is a group of dedicated professionals with five primary goals:

  • Ensuring the genetic and demographic health of the captive population
  • Advancing the care of captive chimpanzees
  • Engaging in research to help learn more about chimpanzees and their care
  • Educating the public about critical chimp issues
  • Partnering with other organizations that seek to improve the lives of wild and captive chimpanzees

Welfare of individuals, social groups and populations

Together with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Chimpanzee SSP serves the 40 accredited zoos housing chimpanzees in North America.

Working closely with respected professionals in the field, the SSP provides help and guidance to zoos housing chimpanzees.  Together, zoos and the SSP seeks to provide the best possible environment for these amazing animals.
