Checking in from Atlanta
Thu, 09/15/2011 - 1:16pm
Greetings from Atlanta, where I'm attending the annual conference of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). While it's always fun and informative to meet with peers from other zoos around the nation, these conferences are always hectic. Seminars and workshops fill my days and meetings fill my nights. But it's always worth it, particularly knowing that experts from Lincoln Park Zoo are making 30 presentations at this conference.
This morning's opening presentation was given by Chip Heath, author of books that explore ways we can alter our mindsets about work and life. He discussed the changing public perception of zoos and how we, as zoo employees, can best communicate our story. It was enlightening.
The purpose of these annual conferences is to sharpen AZA institutions' focus and to educate staff on new developments, technology and techniques that can be applied in the day-to-day business of running a zoo and in the long-term conservation and science initiatives. In short, we're all here to improve our care for animals.
As always, I'll keep you posted.
