Today was a really amazing day. Chunde Bigambo, who will be working with me studying domestic dogs, and I had an opportunity to speak to some first-year wildlife management students from the University of Dar es Salaam about the Serengeti Health Initiative.
Chunde, who was recently in Chicago for a Lincoln Park Zoo–Wildlife Without Borders training program, gave an amazing presentation about ecosystem health and what the Serengeti Health Initiative is doing to preserve this World Heritage site. He explained how ecosystem health is comprised of not only healthy wildlife populations but also the health of the people and domestic animals that make up that ecosystem.

Follow up:
We later talked about how dog vaccinations in villages surrounding Serengeti National Park have reduced the incidence of rabies in humans, domestic animals and wildlife as well as my research, which will study the impact of vaccinations on domestic dog survival and reproduction. It turned into a really dynamic discussion.

On the way back to the field house, we spotted a lioness on the prowl and some elephants with new babies having a blast in the dust. What a great day!
