For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a look at red panda cubs Sheffield and Waveland in the den shortly after they were born June 24. The pair are still growing behind the scenes at the Kovler Lion House with mom Leafa.
Sheffield and Waveland’s births came about thanks to a breeding recommendation from the Red Panda Species Survival Plan®, a shared management effort by institutions throughout the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Scientists at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Population Management Center analyze family trees for animals across North America to recommend the best matches and moves to keep zoo populations healthy over the long run. In fact, our experts just met this week for the next round of red panda planning!
