Zoos Bond in Times of Crisis

We all direct our sympathies to Japan.

Just as Lincoln Park Zoo is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), many Japanese zoos belong to the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), which, like AZA, collaborate on education, breeding programs and conservation endeavors to ensure the welfare of animals in zoos and the protection of animals in the wild.

Zoo and aquarium associations worldwide rally in times of need. This week, we received word that several wildlife facilities in Japan need to move animals to more secure locations due to food and water shortages. There have also been devastating losses of life, but our focus now is directed to the animals that can still be saved.

Lincoln Park Zoo, like many AZA zoos around the country, is providing financial support to our sister-association in Japan during this crisis. We’ll be keeping our eyes on the situation and doing everything possible to assist those in need.

As always, I’ll keep you posted.
Sincerely,
Kevin Bell
