West Gate Closing

Given the weather we’ve all endured, you might not think we’ve made much progress building Regenstein Macaque Forest. But the zoo’s next great exhibit continues to be on schedule. As a result, we’re taking our next step in the construction this week by closing the zoo’s West Gate until June.

Eadie Levy's Landmark Cafe remains untouched, but the area around it has been transformed by the work to build Regenstein Macaque Forest.

This closure will let us do the heavy maneuvering needed to build our state-of-the-art home for Japanese macaques. At the same time, we’re eager to continue to welcome guests to the zoo as construction proceeds.

Visitors can still enter as normal through the parking lot’s East Gate on Cannon Drive. Those arriving via Stockton Drive can make their way in through the entrances near the Lincoln Park Conservatory (by the Harris Family Foundation Black Rhinoceros Exhibit), the Café Brauer gate (near the Waterfowl Lagoon) and what we affectionately call the “camel gate” at the south end of the Antelope & Zebra Area.

We hope you’ll take advantage of the relative heat wave we’re having this week to come see your favorite animals. You may be able to get a peek at the Regenstein Macaque Forest construction as well, although most of the work remains at ground level. If the weather holds up, we’ll soon be able to lay the foundation—and even potentially raise the first walls—for Regenstein Macaque Forest and the upcoming Lionel Train Adventure.

It’s an exciting time for the zoo, and we appreciate your patience through the West Gate closing. It’ll be worth it when the new buildings open this fall!
