Visit Keo’s Chimpanzees

With the replacement window in place at Regenstein Center for African Apes, I’m happy to announce we again have a full building of great apes. Keo’s chimpanzee group has moved onto exhibit, giving guests the chance to visit a Lincoln Park Zoo icon.

At 54 years of age, Keo is the oldest male chimpanzee in any accredited North American zoo. He typically lives behind the scenes with females Vicky and Kibali, who have joined him on exhibit. The group has been busy exploring their temporary home, “fishing” treats from the artificial termite mound and craning necks to see Hank’s chimpanzee group across the way.

The last time we put Keo’s group on exhibit, back in April, we saw plenty of intraspecies interest between the groups. Come to Regenstein Center for African Apes this weekend to see the great ape activity yourself.

I also have an update on the zoo’s upcoming gorilla bachelor troop. Newcomers Mosi and Umande are now living together behind the scenes as they go through quarantine. Animal care staff report plenty of play as the adolescent apes wrestle and chase each other throughout the day and bunk down together at night.

We hope to begin introducing Mosi and Umande to Azizi and Amare, in turn, in coming weeks. Once the group is comfortable behind the scenes, we’ll move them on exhibit—hopefully sometime in July (although scheduling is always dependent on the animals).

Something you can definitely mark on your calendar is tomorrow’s Blue Ribbon SuperZooPicnic—our annual members celebration! This year features a state fair theme with bingo, a Ferris wheel for little ones and a pie-eating contest. (If you’re interested in that last one, come hungry and reserve a pie early, as spaces are limited.)

SuperZooPicnic tickets will still be available for members at the gate. And if you’re not a member and would like to join us for an evening of blue-ribbon fun, you can even sign up on the spot.

Hope to see you there!
