Two Bachelors and a Baby

It’s been a busy week for the primate population at Lincoln Park Zoo! On Saturday, we were happy to welcome a new Bolivian gray titi monkey baby at the Helen Brach Primate House.

The new arrival is the ninth offspring for father Ocala and mother Delasol, who is the oldest female in an accredited North America zoo to have successfully given birth. The parents and baby live together in the treetops with four older siblings: Suriqui, Madeira, Matzah and the youngest, Ocho, who was born last October.

The gender for this newest arrival is still unknown; right now it spends most its time nestled snugly against mom’s back. Soon, though, other members of the family will begin sharing the load, carrying the little one up trees and over branches.

As you visit the new baby, be sure to head next door to catch the first pairing of our gorilla bachelor troop at Regenstein Center for African Apes. After getting to know one another behind the scenes, adolescent gorillas Azizi and Amare started sharing the building’s south exhibit today.

Both are familiar faces. The young apes have spent most of their lives at the zoo; Azizi is the son of former silverback JoJo and Amare the son of current silverback Kwan. But they’re now branching off on their own, in an exciting social dynamic that should inspire plenty of play.

Azizi and Amare will have the exhibit to themselves for the next several weeks. Once they’re comfortable, we plan to give new gorillas Mosi and Umande a chance to acclimate on their own before putting the whole group together. I’ll be sure to keep you updated as we make the changes.

So come by this week to see the titi monkey baby and the budding bachelors. And if you’re looking for something special to do on Friday, be sure to check out our last Jammin’ at the Zoo concert of the season: Hot Chelle Rae and Allstar Weekend on the zoo’s South Lawn.
