Signs of Spring
I’m happy to say the first crocuses are coming into bloom at the zoo. These new flowers offer a welcome reminder that spring’s on its way. But they also remind me of big plans in store for the zoo’s gardens.

We’re in the process of developing a garden master plan for Lincoln Park Zoo—our first since Swain Nelson’s original sketch of Lincoln Park. By bringing every inch of the zoo under one green banner, we’re going to make it look better than ever before.
Last week I went over some preliminary sketches with landscape architects. The plans are still a work in progress, but I was impressed with what I saw. By blurring the lines between exhibit and viewing area, the new landscapes will let visitors feel closer to the animals than ever before.
I’ll keep you informed as we go through the process. In the meantime, come to the zoo to see these first spring flowers. You can spot them along the current Main Mall—and then try to imagine the changes ahead.
