Sahar Makes His Debut

The Kovler Lion House welcomed the first stirrings of a new pride today as 2-year-old lion Sahar went on exhibit for the first time.

New lion Sahar ventures onto his exhibit for the first time.

In a carefully planned first step, the young male was given access to the lower portion of the building’s outdoor yard. As he becomes comfortable with his new home, he’ll begin to explore the upper habitat and indoor exhibit, where visitors will soon see this impressive predator.

Sahar will be by himself at first as animal care staff choreograph his introduction with 16-year-old Myra. The two big cats have been getting to know another behind the scenes through exchanged scents and distant sightings. Soon the pair will begin a series of “howdies” where they see, smell and hear one another while separated by protective mesh. When our experts feel they’re ready, the pride will begin to prowl the Lion House.

As this is a social pairing and not a breeding recommendation from the Lion Species Survival Plan®, lion cubs aren’t on the horizon. Given the age difference, caregivers expect more of a maternal relationship between Myra and Sahar. But the pride will be a dynamic one, offering plenty of excitement as the young male grows and matures.

Come by this weekend to meet the new arrival. If you get a photo of Sahar exploring his new exhibit, be sure to share it on the zoo’s Facebook page for everyone to enjoy.

I’ll be sure to keep you updated as Sahar settles in, drawing his first crowds with roars to remember.

I have been coming to LPZ since I was a kid. I am still crazy about the zoo. My favorite place to go in this whole big crazy city. Thanks for all you do. We are coming to see Sahar next week. Thanks for the update.

SAHAR

WOW! YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. SEE YOU THIS WEEKEND!

Welcome, Sahar! You walk in

Welcome, Sahar! You walk in the footprints of a zoo legend, Adelor. May you live as long and as well as he did.

MISSING SAHAR

I WILL MISS SAHAR. I SAW HIM GROW UP IN TWO YEARS AT THE BRONX ZOO. HE IS SO CUTE AND MY FAVOR. I HAVE SO MANY PICTURE OF HIM WITH HIS SISTERS AND PARENT. I WILL HAVE TO MAKE A TRIP TO GO SEE HIM. ENJOY WATCH HIM.

I am missing the zoo today as

I am missing the zoo today as I see the wonderful pictures. We moved away almost three years ago and the LPZ is what I miss the most! My daughter and I had a great discussion initiated by a scholastic newspaper- she couldn't understand why some people are against zoos. It took me a moment to realize she has never seen a "bad" zoo because she grew up with you!! Keep up the great work and we are looking forward to visiting in the summer and seeing the new additions.

Hoping to meet Sahar

We are coming Friday and hope the introductions have been going well. We had to do a similar introduction with our 2nd house cat when we adopted him last summer. I hope they become buddies like our cats did!
