Helping Hands

Last week I was proud to meet one of the zoo’s biggest supporters, a donor who understands what Lincoln Park Zoo means to the community—and wildlife around the world. He’s 8 years old.

His name is Deven. Deven and his family live in Chicago. He’s a big fan of the zoo, coming several times a week to see animals ranging from polar bear Anana to silverback Kwan. He and his sister Ava have learned about animals at the zoo’s summer conservation camp. He wants to be a zookeeper when he grows up.

Not long ago, Deven and Ava were looking at the zoo website, and they came across our Serengeti Health Initiative. This ecosystem health project is one of our biggest conservation efforts. To protect the region’s people, pets and predators, the zoo leads a yearly campaign to vaccinate domestic dogs in villages surrounding Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. This prevents diseases like distemper and rabies from infecting lions, African wild dogs and local residents.

Deven and Ava decided they wanted to support the zoo’s work in the Serengeti. So they set up a lemonade stand during the Chicago Air & Water Show. Over two days, they raised $100.

Last week, on Deven’s birthday, they came to the zoo to donate this gift. Accepting it on the zoo’s behalf, I was so impressed with their energy, knowledge and their commitment to conservation.

So thank you Deven and Ava. Similarly, thanks to everyone who supports Lincoln Park Zoo and animals around the globe. With friends like you, the zoo can only continue to thrive.
