Least Bittern at Nature Boardwalk

Birders are enjoying a rare sighting at Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. As these photos by local birdwatcher and photographer Clara Coen show, the least bittern, a secretive heron species, has been seen among the pond’s bulrushes.

The least bittern breeds in the region but typically avoids areas with high human activity, making it a rare urban visitor. The bird’s excellent camouflage and tendency to stay out of sight add to the uniqueness of the sighting. (Thanks to Clara for the excellent photos!)

Come by Nature Boardwalk to spot it for yourself. The bird’s low, croaking call can help you find it, even if it’s hidden in the reeds.

Cool pictures. I could hear him while walking around the Boardwalk (on the west side of the pond, by the cows) but I couldn't see him. Now I know what I was listening to. Thanks for the photographs!
