Autumn Meadowhawks Arrive Fashionably Late

Autumn meadowhawks are appropriately named for their habit of being the last dragonflies seen moving through an area in fall. (Most dragonfly species are spotted during the warmer spring and summer months.)

We’ve been seeing lots of autumn meadowhawks flying at Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo lately. These dragonflies match the fall leaves with their brilliant red coloration and cannot be missed.

It isn’t too late too see gorgeous dragonflies out and about at Nature Boardwalk, but these latecomers are likely to be your last chance in 2011. So stop on by and see if you can spot these lovely insects today!
