Footage from Jane Goodall’s first years in the African forest was recently discovered in the researcher’s home. On September 27, you’re invited to view this never-before-seen footage and hear from the woman herself, who will appear via simulcast in Chicagoland movie theaters during “Jane Goodall Live.” This broadcast will highlight not only the 50 years of Goodall's most extraordinary observations of the wild chimpanzees in Tanzania, but will provide rare insight into who Jane is today. Harvest Days & FarmFest 2011

Thanks to all those who joined us at Harvest Days at the Farm-in-the-Zoo Presented by John Deere. Families picked and decorated 2,000 pumpkins on Saturday and Sunday, danced to the music, made crafts and took part in other fun animal activities. (The piglets were a hit.) Special thanks to our sponsors Lifeway Foods, Whole Foods, CLIF Kid and MB Financial for making this event possible. On Saturday night, the Auxiliary Board welcomed 600 guests to FarmFest, where they rode a mechanical bull, drank handcrafted beers and nibbled on tasty treats.

Celebrating Seniors—Chimpanzee

As the oldest chimpanzee in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums facility, 53-year-old Keo has the normal problems we primates face as we age. He’s developing a cataract in one eye. He moves a bit more slowly these days. His cardiac health is being monitored. And he soaks his biscuits to soften them before he bites.

But, like those of us in our golden years, he receives medical care to mitigate these problems. At his routine physical exam in October, an ophthalmologist will exam that cataract and a team of cardiologists will be present to check his heart.
