Meet Zig, an inhabitant of the Budongo Forest Reserve in northwest Uganda. The male chimpanzee, who lost his right eye in a dominance battle with another male, is in his late teens but appears much older due to the general hardships of life in the wild.

Creepy Critters—Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches

Only the males make the titular sound, but both genders are labeled Madagascar hissing cockroaches. And it’s not a traditional hiss like a person or a snake would make. The sound that these insects emit isn’t a vocalization at all, rather the byproduct of air rushing out of tiny holes in the males’ backs. Learn more here.

Wine & Wildlife: Black-Footed Ferrets—Back from the Brink

‎30 years ago black-footed ferrets were considered extinct, but the discovery of a wild population jumpstarted a recovery program that’s reintroduced 2,600 individuals to the wild. Autumn Animal Photography Recap

Zoo photographer John Kortas kicked off Saturday’s Autumn Animal Photography workshop with special tips for getting the right shot. Participants then enjoyed opportunities to photograph zoo animals—including the ostrich—as they interacted with special enrichment items.
