A Welcome Visitor

Endangered in Illinois, black-crowned night herons have been spotted around Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo for years now. But we’re starting to see them in the zoo as well, as this juvenile near the Hope B. McCormick Swan Pond shows. Have you seen the herons on your visit?

Night Heron

Think we saw one at the pond by the Peggy Notebaert Science Museum just to the north of the building. We were on the pond dock and saw it on the east shore of the pond in the detritis on the shore

Thanks for Sharing

It seems they are expanding through the area!

Night Herons

On our small lake in Prestbury, Sugar Grove too. This a female or young? We saw curlyed feather over eye, long orange feet, big eyes (for night hunting?) Amazing bird.

Re: Night Herons

This one is a juvenile! You can see a photo of an adult at the bottom of this post from Coordinator of Wildlife Management Mason Fidino.
