Saving Smooth Green Snakes

We’re proud to announce the hatchings of nine smooth green snakes! The little insect-eaters came to the zoo as eggs—part of a new conservation partnership aimed at restoring the species to the McHenry County Conservation District.

The snakes will spend the next year growing behind the scenes before a potential release next summer.

This isn’t the zoo’s first partnership to restore smooth green snakes to Northern Illinois; we’ve worked with the Lake County Forest Preserve District on a restoration project since 2010.
