King Plays in the Snow

Everyone wants to get outside in the warming weather! Plenty of animals took advantage of this mini heatwave to head out and play, including baby black rhino King, who's now tipping the scales at 579 pounds. Thanks to Keeper Marisa Elizalde for these fun photos.

Baby rhino King and mom Kapuki decided to explore the snow in their outdoor yard at the Harris Family Foundation Black Rhinoceros Exhibit today.

King seemed eager to romp in the relatively warm weather.

Kapuki got into the play as well, dipping her horn into the snow. Unfortunately, black rhinos in the wild are facing a conservation crisis due to poaching for their horns. Lincoln Park Zoo is proud to help conserve this amazing species.

King and Kapuki in the Snow

STUNNING photos. So happy to see them frolicking in the snow. I just got back from Tanzania and was lucky enough to see 5 of their black rhino cousins in Nogorongoro Crater - very special., Thanks for posting these - by spring King will be MASSIVE. So pleased that Kapuki and the keepers are caring so well for our little big guy.

Glad You Liked Them!

Your trip sounds amazing--what an experience! King is going to keep getting bigger and bigger...

Thank you!

Thank you for posting these wonderful photos of Chicago's own Kapuki and King. We are so lucky to have them safe and sound (and snowy) at our beautiful zoo.

We Agree

Glad you liked the photos!

Playing in snow

Guess King wouldn't get to do this in Africa. Except for the first day he was on public view we haven't been able to see him despite 4 other attempts. Any hints as to when he goes outside? Is there a minimum temperature?

Seeing King

Sorry to hear you haven't had much like seeing King. Right now it is tricky--his caregivers evaluate the temperature, wind and possible ice in determining whether it's a good day for King to head outside. Lately, the conditions haven't been favorable, but with a warm-up hopefully coming, King should be venturing out more!

These photos are priceless!

These photos are priceless! Only in Chicago will you see black rhinos enjoying SNOW! Awesome!!

Re: Priceless Photos

We enjoyed seeing them ourselves--pretty different!
