In theory, summer is a great time to take a road trip. However, I’m happy to start staying in one place for a while! Over the past six weeks, my staff and I traveled more than 1,900 miles, crossed six state lines and spent 36 hours on the road moving nearly 1,000 pounds of live cargo.

As a bird curator, I frequently find myself being asked, “What is your favorite bird?” People are always surprised by my answer: “The one that is still in an egg!” So at this time of year, I have a lot to be eggcited about.

It’s always hard to say goodbye to old friends, but hearing reports of their new adventures brightens the day. In December and January, 21 penguins and 45 seabirds left Lincoln Park Zoo when the aging Kovler Penguin-Seabird House closed its doors for the last time.

Caring for animals is the most rewarding job in the world. I am humbled every day working with some of the most amazing, smart and complex animals. Our animal care family develops an incredible emotional bond with the individuals in our care. For 46 years our team here has cared for one incredible individual—June the chimpanzee—and today we sadly had to say goodbye.
