I know this thread is kind of old, but I live in a nice old house on the south side of Chicago (Hyde park), and I discovered a smallish black bat in the basement today. I do not currently have any reason to believe that there are more, except that I thought bats were social and lived in colonies. I have found many options online for removal of the bat, but I am concerned that these companies do not have the bats best interest in mind. Do you have any suggestions? Is it a bad sign that he is still in the Midwest during the winter?

Thanks

I am very interested in bats, I am a science teacher at a school very close to the zoo. In my neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago, I do see bats flying in the backyard and by the alley. If there is any way I can be involved in the research, from school or from home, I would love to be! Juliana Reese-Clauson
