Back Stateside with a Colorful Report

I’ m back in Chicago after my trip to Prague for the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) annual conference, which was fantastic. I learned a great deal while strengthening bonds with other zoos. What  stands out are the similarities between problems facing WAZA institutions and those in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums—collection sustainability, leadership and working with governments to ease regulations on animal transfers.

At the conference I was elected to the council of the WAZA, enabling me to fully represent Lincoln Park Zoo and North American zoos and aquariums when decisions are made about animal husbandry around the globe. I’m honored to serve the WAZA community and help lead our strategic efforts to build the world’s largest conservation movement.

As Chicago Bears fans know, we got whupped by the Detroit Lions Monday night, meaning that I’ll be sending animal-enrichment items to Detroit Zoo, per our wager.

In brighter news, the colors continue to amaze visitors on grounds. If you have not recently visited Lincoln Park Zoo, I implore you to come out and pry your eyes away from the animals to admire the still, silent, stunning handiwork of Mother Nature.

As always, I’ll keep you posted.
Sincerely,
Kevin Bell
