It was the gift of a pair of swans that began Lincoln Park Zoo more than 130 years ago. Toda, a pair of snow-white trumpeter swans still makes its home at the verdant Hope B. McCormick Swan Pond, serving as a continual reminder of the zoo’s long history of preserving wildlife.

Named for its resonating call, the trumpeter swan has made a dramatic comeback from the brink of extinction. In the 1930s fewer than 100 trumpeter swans existed in the wild. Successful breeding and release programs have increased the trumpeter swan population to more than 5,000 birds.
