Lincoln Park Zoo is transforming the pond adjacent to Café Brauer into the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. This revitalized landscape will provide a haven for native birds, frogs, fish, insects and mammals while serving as an outdoor classroom for students of all ages.
What will be transformed?
- New natural shorelines, native vegetation and a re-engineered pond will provide eight acres of prime habitat for native wildlife and environmental education.
- The innovative Peoples Gas Education Pavilion will anchor a wide range of learning programs. Mobile labs will promote hands-on lessons on pond ecology while trained pond naturalists interpret wetlands wildlife.
- An interactive boardwalk circling the pond will engage visitors and provide new opportunities for experiencing nature.
- The area’s beloved views and landmark buildings— the Lester E. Fisher Bridge, Café Brauer, Carlson Cottage—will be enhanced by a new, natural setting.
Construction begins November 2008. The transformed Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo is scheduled to be unveiled in early 2010.

Once completed, the Nature Boardwalk will be a thriving nature
center, inviting visitors
of all ages to reflect upon the wild setting as they research the wildlife
around them.
