Ahoj...I'm Off to Prague

Ahoj! That’s one of the ways they greet one another in Prague, where I’m heading next week to attend the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) annual conference. My enthusiasm for the trip is bolstered by the fact that I was recently named to the WAZA board of directors, joining two other representatives of North American zoological institutions.

Similar to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the governing body for North American institutions, WAZA operates on a global scale, with the goal of guiding, encouraging and supporting member zoos, aquariums and other institutions in regards to animal welfare, environmental education and global conservation. Lincoln Park Zoo is proud to be a member and I am honored to be on the board, enabling me to lend our voice to discussions that impact wildlife around the world.
During the conference we'll focus on creating sustainable animal collections, influencing legislation regarding animal welfare and a host of other topics.
I haven’t left town yet. I’ve been slogging through this rainy week just like the rest of Chicagoans. But this weekend is supposed to be nice. And the fall colors are starting to paint the zoo red, yellow and orange. Cooler temperatures mean more active animals and smaller crowds. In short, it’s a wonderful time to visit the zoo.
I’ll be sure to keep you posted on the happenings in Europe. Until then, ahoj!
